Egypt is not a dress-code minefield — but the difference between a comfortable day and a miserable one is usually decided at the suitcase. Temples in 40°C sun, mosques with real rules, freezing desert nights, and resort pools all in one trip. Here is exactly what to wear in Egypt, by place and by season.

The one rule that actually matters: mosques

Mosques (Muhammad Ali, Al-Azhar, Al-Hussein) enforce dress codes: shoulders and knees covered for everyone; women also cover their hair. Most major mosques lend scarves and cover-ups at the entrance, but bringing your own light scarf is cleaner and faster. Shoes come off at the door — wear slip-ons and socks you do not mind showing.

Temples and tombs: dress for the sun, not the stones

  • Lightweight, loose, breathable fabrics — linen and light cotton beat synthetics by midday.
  • A hat plus sunglasses is non-negotiable at Giza, Karnak, and Abu Simbel: almost no shade, all reflection.
  • Broken-in walking shoes with grip: temple floors are uneven stone, tomb passages slope, desert sand gets everywhere.
  • Modest-by-default (covered shoulders, longer shorts/skirts) earns warmer welcomes everywhere outside resorts.

By season: what changes

SeasonDaysNightsPack
Summer (Jun–Aug)38–45°C, fierce sun25–30°C, still warmLightest clothes, hat, 50+ sunscreen, refillable bottle.
Spring/Autumn (Mar–May, Sep–Nov)28–35°C days15–20°C, desert colderLayers: t-shirt plus fleece for evenings and desert nights.
Winter (Dec–Feb)20–25°C afternoons8–12°C, desert near 0°CWarm jacket for nights, White Desert, and early pyramid sunrises.

Desert nights and the Red Sea: the two extremes

The White Desert surprises everyone: 35°C days collapse to near-freezing nights, even in spring. Tour operators provide heavy blankets for sleeping, but you still need a warm mid-layer, long trousers, and closed shoes for the evening fire. At the other extreme, Red Sea resorts (Hurghada, Sharm) are swimwear-anywhere zones — normal beach dress is completely fine there, with a cover-up for buffets and trips into town.

Packing list that covers the whole trip

  • Light scarf (mosques, sun, wind, and respectful coverage in one item).
  • Broken-in walking shoes + sandals.
  • Sun hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen.
  • One warm layer — always, whatever the month.
  • Modest swimwear plus a cover-up.
  • Small daypack for water, tickets, and the layers you will peel by 10 AM.
