Done with Giza? Luxor’s tombs, Aswan’s islands, Alexandria’s coast, desert nights and Red Sea beaches — where to go next, and how many days each needs.

Standing in front of the Great Pyramid is the moment most Egypt trips are built around — and then, the morning after, a happy question: what now? The good news is that Giza is only the prologue. Egypt packs temples, tombs, oases, and coastline into one country, and most of the essential next stops are a short flight or a comfortable drive away. Here is where to go after the pyramids, in the order most travelers enjoy them.

1. Luxor — the world's greatest open-air museum

If you visit one more place in Egypt, make it Luxor. A one-hour flight from Cairo lands you among the densest concentration of ancient monuments on earth: the Valley of the Kings, where pharaohs were buried in painted underground tombs; Karnak Temple, a forest of 134 giant columns you can walk through; and Luxor Temple, which glows beautifully after sunset. Give it two to three days — one for the West Bank (tombs and temples of the dead kings), one for the East Bank (Karnak and Luxor Temple), and a felucca sail at golden hour if you have a third. Browse our Luxor tours to do it with an Egyptologist.

2. Aswan and Abu Simbel — Nubia at its most beautiful

South of Luxor, Aswan moves at a slower rhythm: granite islands, Nubian villages painted in bright colors, and the Nile at its most scenic. Visit the Philae Temple (reached by motorboat), the Unfinished Obelisk, and take a sunset felucca around Elephantine Island. From Aswan, the great add-on is Abu Simbel — Ramses II's colossal rock temples, a 3-hour drive each way and absolutely worth the early start. Plan two days for Aswan plus the Abu Simbel day trip.

3. Alexandria — the Mediterranean side of Egypt

Founded by Alexander the Great, Alexandria feels like a different country: sea breeze, Greek and Roman ruins, and legendary seafood. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Citadel of Qaitbay (built on the site of the ancient lighthouse), and the Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa fill a satisfying one or two days, and it is an easy 2.5-hour drive from Cairo — doable even as a long day trip. See our Alexandria tours.

4. The White Desert — a night under the strangest sky in Egypt

For something completely unlike temples and tombs, head west to the Bahariya Oasis and sleep in the White Desert, where wind-carved chalk formations glow orange at sunset and the Milky Way takes over after dark. Tours run as overnight camping trips from Cairo with Bedouin guides, dinner by the fire, and sunrise over the sculptures. If you only add one adventure to a classic itinerary, this is the one people talk about for years.

5. Faiyum — fossils, lakes, and an easy day out

Only two hours from Cairo, the Faiyum Oasis is the lightest add-on on this list: Wadi El-Hitan (Valley of the Whales), a UNESCO site with 40-million-year-old whale skeletons lying in open desert; Qarun Lake for birdwatching; and the waterfalls of Wadi El-Rayan. One full day, back in Cairo for dinner.

6. The Red Sea — when the temples are done, rest

End the trip the way smart travelers do: two or three slow days in Hurghada or Sharm El-Sheikh. Reefs a short boat ride offshore, beaches, and resorts at a fraction of Mediterranean prices. It pairs perfectly after Luxor and Aswan — fly south to north, finish by the water.

How to choose: days needed at a glance

DestinationDays neededBest for
Luxor2–3Tombs, temples, the essential second stop
Aswan + Abu Simbel2–3Nubian culture, Nile scenery, colossi
Alexandria1–2Greco-Roman history, seafood, sea air
White Desert2 (1 night)Camping, surreal landscapes, stars
Faiyum1Fossils, lakes, easy day trip
Red Sea2–3Diving, beaches, switching off

Practical tips for stringing it together

  • Fly Cairo → Luxor → Aswan, then fly back from Aswan — domestic flights are short and cheap, and this avoids backtracking.
  • Desert nights get cold even in spring: pack a warm layer for the White Desert whatever the season.
  • Abu Simbel starts around 4 AM from Aswan. It is a long day, but nobody regrets it.
  • Book the Valley of the Kings tombs with a guide — the extra tombs (Seti I, Nefertari) cost more and are worth deciding about in advance.
