Stuck with 8+ hours between flights in Cairo? Do not spend them in the terminal. The pyramids are under an hour from the airport, and with a private driver and a plan, a long layover becomes the best day of your whole trip. Here is exactly how to do it — for 6, 8, and 12-hour connections.

First: can you leave the airport?

Most travelers can: many nationalities get a visa on arrival at Cairo airport, and transit passengers with long connections routinely go through immigration for the day. Rules change, so confirm your nationality's requirements before you fly — and keep your onward boarding pass and passport on you. As a rule of thumb: under 6 hours, stay put; 6–8 hours, pyramids only; 8+, the full day below. Always be back at the airport 3 hours before an international departure. Cairo traffic is the one variable you cannot negotiate with.

The 8-hour layover: pyramids express

TimePlan
Hour 0–1Immigration, meet your pre-booked driver outside arrivals.
Hour 1–4Giza Plateau: Great Pyramid viewpoint, Sphinx, panorama photos.
Hour 4–5Quick lunch near the pyramids (koshary or grilled meats).
Hour 5–6Drive back with buffer for traffic.
Hour 6–8Airport: security, lounge, duty free.

The 12-hour layover: the full Cairo day

  • Morning: pyramids and Sphinx at opening — empty plateau, best light.
  • Midday: the Grand Egyptian Museum (2 km away) or the old Egyptian Museum downtown.
  • Afternoon: Citadel of Saladin and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali for the city panorama.
  • Evening: Khan el-Khalili bazaar for tea, souvenirs, and people-watching — then back to the airport.

Layover rules that save the day

  • Pre-book a private driver, not a taxi queue — fixed price, waiting with your name, no haggling with a boarding clock ticking.
  • Luggage: leave checked bags through to your final destination; take only a daypack through immigration.
  • Friday mornings are quiet on the roads; weekday evenings are the worst — plan around both.
  • Keep small cash (EGP) for tickets, tips, and tea — cards work in museums, not everywhere else.
  • A guide doubles your speed: skip-the-confusion at gates, tickets handled, no wrong turns.
We run private layover tours timed to your flights — driver waiting at arrivals, pyramids with a guide, back with hours to spare. Or send your flight times via Make Your Trip and we will build the hours for you.
